WIG – formerly the Women’s International Group – was founded in 1990 and has built up a unique and privileged position in Lao PDR over the past 25 years.
WIG is a voluntary group that aims to:
• Create opportunities for people living in Lao PDR to meet and interact
• Support projects benefiting Lao society
• Create opportunities to learn more about Lao history, culture and current affairs
We welcome men and women of all nationalities and offer a wide variety of social, welfare and cultural activities.
Regular activities include social events, English language conversation, groups that meet to play cards and other games, book club, art group, sewing group, cultural studies talks and presentations, health and education welfare projects, and fundraising.
WIG is administered by a volunteer Council that meets once every other month. Its members are both the officers of the Council – Representative, Deputy Representative, Secretary, Treasurer, and Membership Secretary – and the heads of working-groups. The officers are elected at an Annual General Meeting held in February every year. All members are invited to Council and general meetings and are encouraged to participate in WIG activities as much as possible.
Traditionally, WIG has held a fundraising Bazaar in November every year, where vendors sell a vast array of foods, products and crafts. The event is a highlight of the Vientiane calendar, featuring live entertainment, a raffle and fun and games for children, as well as exhibits from international NGOs, businesses and diplomatic missions.
Income from the Bazaar, and other sources, is used to fund our health and education projects. WIG has funded materials to build numerous schools over the years. We also provide transport, food and clothing to patients who come to hospital from all over Lao PDR for reconstructive and plastic surgery carried out by visiting international medical teams.
WIG is always looking for ways to assist other health and education initiatives. We aim to support sustainable projects that benefit a large number of people and so it is not our policy to fund salaries, scholarships or medical care.
WIG is a non-profit making group, administered and operated by its members on a voluntary basis. WIG projects are run by the members who volunteer their time and effort so that all monies earned through fundraising go directly to those projects.
Joining WIG is a great way to get to know people and take part in a wide variety of fun, interesting and worthwhile activities here in Laos. We need an ever-increasing range of skills as WIG continues to develop, so we hope members will volunteer their ideas, enthusiasm and talents in any way they can.
Together we can make a difference.
