2016 WIG Photography Competition Winners

WIG Laos threw an opening night bash for our 10th Annual Photography Competition Exhibition and Awards, with around 80 photographers and community members flocking to Icat gallery on Friday, August 26.

This year we were excited to receive a record number of 61 entries into the competition, from people of all ages, nationalities and skill levels. All the entrants generously donated their wonderful images to be sold via silent auction on the night, with all funds raised going to WIG's health and education projects in Laos. We are happy to announce that we sold almost all photographs in the auction.

The winning entries were judged by our esteemed judging panel: professional photographer Mick Shippen; visual artist and photographer Olé Viravong Scovill; and photographer and curator Catherine O'Brien. The judges deliberated, discussed and debated throughout the process of selecting the competition winners - a tough job when they had more than 60 photographs to consider! All photographers remained anonymous during the process, to ensure a fair competition.

The winners of the 10th Annual Photography Competition are:

1st Prize: Tranquility in a Rice Paddy by Sebastien Mathey.
2nd Prize: Such Happy Lunch Time by Khamphet Kim
3rd Prize: Bikes in Luang Prabang by Ella Cesnik
Youth Encouragement Award: Tranquility by Jae Ran Kim
People's Choice Award (as voted by the audience): Monks on the Mekong by Jonathan Look

Each year WIG produces a fantastic calendar which we sell to raise funds for our health and education projects – all of the winning photos will appear in WIGs 2017 Calendar, which will be available for purchase at the WIG Bazaar in November.

The other photographs selected for the calendar are:

Pak Ou Caves by Antony Giblin
Follow Me by Michelle Roche
Weaving by Santi Owen
Brother & Sister by Jonathan Look
Man at Work by Deirdre Mathey
Magical Colours of Dusk by Hannah McDonald-Moniz
Fish Man by Tom Christophersen
Suanmone Market by Sora Ishihara

Congratulations to all the winners, and a huge THANK YOU to all the photographers who entered!

We'd like to thank Vilakone Phanchantavong for our poster designs,Monument Books Laos for receiving all competition entries, our judging panel, and everyone who attended last night for their support of WIG and our projects.

A very special thank you to Catherine O'Brien, one of our judges and the owner of Icat gallery. Catherine is a long-time member and supporter of WIG and she generously donated two of her photographs to be sold via silent auction (please note, her photos were not entered into the competition and therefore not eligible to be judged).
